Most automated gates we inspect would fail a force test

Not because they are badly built, but because nobody measured the forces or wrote anything down. If the public, residents or your staff can reach the gate, that gap is your liability.

We carry out independent inspection and calibrated impact force testing, and issue a report you can act on, whether or not you use us for the remedial work.

  • BS EN 12453

Safety in use of power operated gates

Sets the maximum impact forces a powered gate may exert and how they must be measured. This is what force testing tests against.

  • BS EN 13241

Product standard for industrial and garage doors and gates

Covers the product requirements a powered gate installation has to meet before it can be placed into service.

  • SMSR 2008

    Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations

A powered gate is machinery. It must be risk-assessed, safeguarded, and supplied with a declaration of conformity.

  • HSWA 1974

Health and Safety at Work Act

Whoever controls the site has an ongoing duty to keep the gate safe in use, not just at the point it was installed.

How we work

Six steps, and the fourth is the one most contractors skip

Every installation and upgrade runs the same sequence, so you always know what stage the job is at and what has been proved before we leave.

  1. Survey, on site

  2. Itemised quotation

  3. Installation, sequenced

  4. Force test & certify

  5. Handover & training

  6. Maintenance cycle

  • Long mesh sliding gate spanning a wide yard entrance
    IndustrialNottingham

Sliding gate on a continuous-duty distribution yard

    The brief
A 9m cantilever sliding gate on a yard turning around 300 vehicle movements a day. The previous domestic-grade operator had failed twice in eighteen months.
    What we did
Heavy-duty sliding operator specified to continuous duty, new ground track and drainage, induction loops for free exit and HGV detection, traffic lights on the pedestrian crossing point. Now on a quarterly maintenance cycle.
  • Tall bar gates under an archway at the entrance to an apartment courtyard
    CommercialLondon & the Home Counties

Portfolio compliance survey across 34 gated sites

    The brief
A managing agent inherited a portfolio of gated residential developments with no force-test records and no idea of its exposure.
    What we did
Calibrated impact force testing to BS EN 12453 across all 34 entrances, pass/fail per measurement point, defects ranked by severity with costed remedials. 11 sites required immediate safeguarding work; the rest were scheduled over two quarters.
  • Red and white barriers controlling a retail service road
    CommercialBirmingham

Car park barriers with ANPR for a retail park

    The brief
Persistent abuse of customer spaces by non-shoppers, with a requirement to keep genuine customer throughput fast at peak.
    What we did
Two high-speed rising-arm barriers with ANPR on entry, loop detection on exit and validation at the units. Vehicle clearance under three seconds at peak, and the abuse stopped within a fortnight.

The things people ask us first

All FAQs

Does my automatic gate legally need to be force tested?

Yes. A powered gate is classed as machinery under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, which requires it to be risk-assessed, safeguarded and supplied with a declaration of conformity. Impact forces are measured against the limits set out in BS EN 12453 using calibrated test equipment. If a gate can be reached by the public, by residents, by children or by employees, whoever is responsible for the site also has a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act to keep it safe in use. We carry out the testing and issue the documentation.

Do you attend emergencies out of hours?

Yes. We run an out-of-hours emergency callout for gates that have failed open or failed shut, so a fault outside office hours is dealt with rather than logged for the next working day. How soon we can be with you depends on where the site is and what else is running, so we will tell you honestly when you call rather than quote a blanket figure. Sites on a maintenance contract take priority over ad-hoc callouts. If the entrance is insecure right now, phone rather than using the contact form.

Can you repair a gate that somebody else installed?

Yes. Most of our repair work is on systems we did not install. We work on all the mainstream manufacturers including CAME, BFT, FAAC, Nice, Ditec and Roger Technology, and on older or discontinued boards where a like-for-like replacement is no longer made. In those cases we will tell you honestly whether a sympathetic repair or a control-board retrofit is the better value.

How much does an automatic gate cost?

It depends on the gate, the ground and the traffic, so we quote after a site survey rather than over the phone. As a rough guide, automating a pair of sound existing swing gates on a domestic driveway is the least expensive option; a new sliding gate with groundworks, ducting, a new power supply and access control is considerably more. What we will not do is quote a low figure and then discover the groundworks. The survey is free and the quotation is itemised so you can see what each element costs.

How often should an automatic gate be serviced?

Annually as a minimum for a lightly used private driveway. Six-monthly for commercial sites and anywhere the public or residents can reach the gate. Quarterly for high-traffic industrial entrances. Frequency is driven by duty cycle and by who uses the entrance: the more movements and the more untrained users, the more often it needs checking. Every service visit should include a re-test of the impact forces, because they drift as the gate wears.

Thinking about a new gate?

Tell us about the entrance and we will come and look at it, then specify the gate and operator that suit the opening, the traffic and the site. Surveys are free and quotations are itemised.
